The Artists
This book represents the author Feng Jicai’s homage to Romain Rolland’s novel Jean-Christophe, and to idealism in general. China in the 1960s was a time in dire shortage of both material and spiritual sources. In this period, Feng depicts a handful of young artists who embarked quietly upon their creative careers. They were led – as their age was led – by a pure passion for artistic exploration. However, as commercialization rose to the fore in society, spiritual and artistic passion was choked by the ashes of the mundane. As the artists were drawn into the maelstrom of life, how can they maintain their ideals and utilize their talents? How would they balance between life and art? The author has incorporated elements from his own life experiences and reflections, and projected them onto the fates of his characters. It could be said that the author has himself walked on this road, to have been a part of this aesthetic journey.
